NR PROJECTS

Since 1948, NR has been pushing technology forward with ever increasing capabilities.  These advancements are achieved through a combination of focused research and development which get proven in practical full-scale testing and then implemented in major projects.

STR Mk 1 (S1W Prototype)

The Submarine Thermal Reactor Mk 1 was later designated as S1W and was the land-based prototype for Nautilus. Construction of the prototype started in August 1950 at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. It would achieve initial critical operation in March 1953. In June 1953, it would achieve full-power and perform a simulated "transatlantic run".
