On December 12th 1951, the Navy Department announced that she would be the sixth ship of the fleet to bear the name NAUTILUS.

On November 14, 1992, Ted Rockwell (NRHQ 1949-1964) hosted a reunion for NRHQ Alumni.

A separate reunion of anyone involved in the Program including NR, labs, SYs, and contractors was held in Chicago on 11/17/1992.

1968 - Loss of Soviet Submarine K-129

IN March 1968, the Soviet G_II submarine K-129 sank with a loss of all hands in 16,000 feet of water in the Pacific. THE US CIA would attempt to raise the submarine in 1974 under Project Azorian using the Hughes Glomar Explorer

1969 - President Nixon orders Navy to move out of Main Navy Buildings

December 1969, President Nixon ordered the Main Navy building taken down and the Navy to move the 12,000 personnel

Rickover Returns from ORNL

Rickover returned from ORNL to BuShips Washington D.C.,

which at the time was struggling to define its role with respect to the AEC in

developing a nuclear submarine.


Admiral Mills, then Chief of BuShips, appointed Rickover as Special Assistant to the

Chief, with the task of obtaining high-level Navy and…
